With the current design, Availability is very prominent, but Status is not. Often, I have very specific messages I need to convey about my status, and coworkers often simply say "Oh, I didn't even notice that!".

Perhaps Status could appear below one's picture in conversation threads:

[pic with availability colours, etc.]

OR to the left or right of one's name:

Reyes, Wil (status)

(status) Reyes, Wil

AND

below when one sees a message:

Seen by: [pic]

(status)

This would make the status immediately noticeable when clicking on someone's image to go back to the conversation thread to chat.
